במהלך אפריל 2017 הגיע אלי בדוא"ל הירחון של אגודת האלונאים IOS – The International Oak Society . בין היתר מברכת האגודה את הצטרפותו של חבר חדש מאחת ממדינות האזור דוברת ערבית.
לאחר מספר חילופי הודעות ביני לבין אותו חבר, החלטתי להוסיף לפרופיל הקבוצה של
"עצי אלון – quercus – oak trees" בפייסבוק מידע נוסף על השמות של עצי האלון באזורינו בשפה הערבית. נעזרתי בין היתר לצורך כך, במאמר של א. דפני וס. ע. ח'טיב: "שמות עץ האלון ופתגמיו".
3 מיני האלונים הנפוצים במרחב של מדינת ישראל הם אלון מצוי, אלון תבור ואלון תולע. לכל אחד מן העצים הללו יש שם/כינוי בערבית.
משך את תשומת ליבי השם של אלון התולע.
אלון התולע, קרוי באנגלית Cypress oak, זכה לשם לטיני Quercus boissierii על שם פייר אדמון בואסייה, Pierre Edmond Boissier בוטנאי ומתמטיקאי חשוב שפעל גם באזור זה במאה ה 19.
דפני וחטיב כותבים על האלון הזה: "שמו המדעי של מין זה מנציח חוקר שוויצרי דגול (1882 -1810) Edmund Boissier שחיבר חמישה כרכים עבי כרס בשם ""Flora Orientalis שעסקו בצמחית המזרח התיכון. אלון התולע מכונה גם בשם "בַּלוּט עָפְסִי (بلوط عفصي = אלון העפצים) או "עָפְס" (عفص"= עפץ ), שם המציין לעתים נדירות גם את אלון התבור וכן מיני אלונים אחרים, המצויים במרחב שבין ספרד לפרס ואינם גדלים בארץ"
מסתבר ששמו של אלון התולע בערבית بلوط عفصي, בַּלוּט עָפְסִי הוא בעצם "אלון העפצים" המתאר את ריבוי העפצים על אלונים בכלל ובאלון זה בפרט ומתייחס ללרוה [תולעת] אשרצומחת בענפיו ומהווה גלגול של הצרעה שיצרה אותה.
השם הזה הזכיר לי את המאמר המאיר של משה רענן: "ולא פרעתיך מאה עפצי" העוסק באלון התולע. מכאן התגלגלתי למאמר הנוסף של משה רענן: "מביא תכלת וארגמן ותולעת שני שזורין – כרמיל", ולמאמר "תקוות השני" של זהר עמר.
שמה העברי של הכנימה [תולעת] ממנה מפיקים את צבע השני הוא "כרמיל מצוי". באנגלית שמה Kermes ובלטינית, Kermes echinatus. בערבית שמה "קרמז". יצאנו מאלון התולע וחזרנו לאלון המצוי אשר שמו האנגלי הוא Kermes oak.

האלון המצוי, Kermes oak, נקרא בשמו המדעי Quercus calliprinos, נחשב ע"פ הטקסונומיה לוורסיה או תת מין של אלון הצומח במרכז ומערב הים התיכון אשר שמו Quercus coccifera או בתרגום חוזר לעברית, אלון שני.
הטקסונומים, מחלקים את עצי האלון למספר קבוצות עיקריות הכוללות בין היתר:
אלונים לבנים, white oak group
אלונים אדומים, red oak group
אלונים שסועים – Quercus cerris
האלון המצוי משתייך לקבוצת האלונים השסועים.
בא בעת, צומח לו בארצות הברית אלון אשר זכה לשם העממי, Scarlet oak או בלטינית Quercus coccinea ובתרגום לעברית, שמו חופף לשמו של אחיו מרחבי הים התיכון, אלון השני, Quercus coccifera. בעוד שאלון השני התיכון שייך לקבוצת האלונים השסועים, אחיו האמריקאי, שייך לקבוצת האלונים האדומים.
הבוטנאים הקדומים ו/או אחיהם מן המאות האחרונות, הינם חדי עיין ובעלי בקיאות רבה במסתרי הצומח והעצים. לשמות אותם העניקו לעצים יש משמעות והקשר לצורה, מופע, צבע, יחס, שפה, תרבות, הסטוריה ועוד קטגוריות כאלה ואחרות.
השאלה שאני העליתי עד היום בפורום מצומצם יחסית על המקורות לשמות של קבוצות האלונים, מהיכן הבחירה של שם הקבוצה אלונים לבנים? מדוע קוראים לאלון האדום, לאלון השני ולקבוצה שלהם האלונים האדומים, וכן, איך זה שעץ אלון שהוא אלון עם שם אדום – אלון השני, שייך לקבוצה של אלונים שסועים?

Kermes oak – the transformation of a name
A few days ago I received an email from the monthly newsletter of the IOS – The International Oak Society, among which the Association welcomes the admission of a new member from one of the Arab countries of the region.
After several exchanges of messages between me and the same friend, I decided to add to the group's profile
"Oak trees – quercus – oak trees", more information about the names of the oak trees in our region in Arabic. I used, among other sources, Daphne & Khatib article in Hebrew: "The Names of the Oak Tree and its Origins".
The three species of oaks common in the State of Israel are Kermes oak, Cypress oak and Tavor oak. Each of these trees has a name / nickname in Arabic.
I was attracted by the name of the Cypress oak, Alon Tola in Hebrew which stands for "The worm oak" or "The Larva oak"
Cypress oak, q. boissierii, was named after Pierre Edmond Boissier, a prominent botanist and mathematician who was active in this area in the 19th century.
Daphne and Khatib write about this oak: "The scientific name of this species is the commemoration of a great Swiss scholar (1882-1810) Edmund Boissier who wrote five volumes called" Flora Orientalis ", which dealt with Middle Eastern vegetation, also known as the" balot aphasi " ), Or "Afs" (Afs), a name that rarely mentions the oak of Tabor and other species of oaks that are found in the space between Spain and Persia and do not grow in the country "
It turns out that the name of the Cypress oak, "The oak of the worm" in Arabic بلوط عفصي, Balot Asfi is actually "oak of the galls." Afsi in arabic and afatz in Hebrew, which is a synonym of "Tola" have the same meaning and sound.
This name reminded me of Moshe Raanan's illuminating article [Hebrew]: "And I did not repay you a hundred of my galls", From here I went to another article by Moshe Raanan: [Hebrew] "Brings Tekhelet and Crimson Worm Braided – Carmil" and Zohar Amar's article: [Hebrew] "The Crimson Hope".
The name of the worm from which the crimson color is produced is "Karmil in English it is called Kermes, in latin, Kermes echinatus. In Arabic it is called "Karmaz". We started our gooney with the Cypress oak, q. boissierii [Tola, Afs or worm] and arrived at the Kermes oak q. calliprinos.
A search for the term Kermes on Google brought me to a page in this link.
The name Kermes refers to a number other words that correspond with each other

Kermes, the name of the crimson worm, the aphid of the Cypress oak, Quercus boissierii, Kermiz in Arabic, is Quercus calliprinos.

The name of the crimson aphid in Latin Kermes echinatus corresponds to the word Encinos, which is the name of the oak in Spanish.
